Most astronauts that observe the Earth from space describe it as a beautiful and extraordinary planet which view rises in them a strong spiritual feeling of connectedness and inner unity of nature and humankind. When looking at Earth from above seeing it as a single entity, they no longer feel a sense of separation which has been instilled in our minds by our culture and education with national divisions or more or less egoistic forms of patriotism, but they see the world as a unique whole where the political and cultural frontiers and separations appear only as a superficial mental categorization. Is this experience of a sense of connection with the whole just only poetry or is it more than that?
It is argued that one of the basic ingredients for peace is the realization that our existence rests on this wholeness and inner connectedness as the basic foundation of existence at a spiritual and multidimensional level. Recovering and nurturing this sense Universalism and Oneness in humanity is the next visible priority that it needs to achieve. Conflicts, wars, ethnic tensions and clashes of selfish national interests will not go as long as humanity will not discover its unity in diversity in the multiplicity. Several ways to peace have been attempted, but none turned out to be satisfying because this aspect was always left out of the discussion, or at best treated only as a marginal issue.
In
fact, history showed, and recent events also confirmed, that military interventions or arming allies on one side, as diplomatic efforts and economic offensives, eventually backed also in the
frame of international coalitions on the other side, or even a mix of the two approaches, did not build a more peaceful and stable world community. On the other hand, in a globalized world where
everything is becoming transnational and tightly inter-connected, the return to isolationism with each country retracting to their own territorial defense, relaying exclusively on a passive
non-intervention policy, is no longer tenable. It is becoming increasingly clear that current approaches must be inherently flawed and need a deep revision of the principles they base itself. The
present document would like to sum up a peace, peacebuilding (PB), peacekeeping (PK), peace research (PR) and conflict resolution (CR) concept that differs from the conventional peace conceptions
in so far that it will not address them merely from the political, economic and material standpoint, but also from a higher perspective which includes all the non-physical, multi-dimensional
aspects of the human being, like its consciousness, soul, mind, emotions and intuitions in the frame of a terrestrial spiritual evolutionary principle as a manifestation of a one universal
reality. The first aspect underlined is that of unity in the multiplicity and diversity as an intrinsic necessity of Nature that stands behind all things living and not, and which is at the root
of all existence. Unity is not just an abstract mental human notion, but is an inevitable movement at the base of all the universal manifestation. The universe is a manifestation as the “One
without a second”, as the Upanishads recited, and much of our sufferings and violent conflicts have a root in the fact that in our daily life, in the regulation of human affairs, in the political
and social life, this transcendent universal cosmic unity is ignored and even denied as a deeper universal truths. No political, economic or military machinery can succeed in maintaining a stable
peace if nations won’t learn and accept a tolerance for their own diversity. This document will try to explain how we can recover this subtle but real inner unity in diversity also in the
organization and adjustment of practical affairs.
A conclusion with a brief note will follow on the fact that also another profound truth is ignored when PB issues are addressed: the human being is not just a physical aggregate, but a soul, an
emotional being, a mental body which is still in the progress of an evolutionary growth. Only an inner and spiritual growth of mankind can pose a real basis for a new peaceful and stable world
order. Our inner dimensions can no longer be ignored either if we want to reach inner and outer peace for us and in the mutual exchange with others.
